
Natural protected areas and tourism in our country are considered as part of protected land and water due to the biological diversity of natural and cultural assets that offer. These 384 areas are protected by the state and they are divided into 6 categories according to their importance: 4 strictly protected areas including Karavasta Lagoon (Lushnje), Gashi River (Tropoje), Rrajca (Librazhd) and Kardhiq (Gjirokastra), 11 national parks, 300 natural monuments; 26 managed areas, 4 protected landscapes, as well as 4 resource protection zones. Protected areas occupy a total area of 109 050 hectares, 10.5% of forest fund and 3.8% of the total land surface. Beginnings of protected areas have begun in 1940 with the declaration or establishment of the first state to reserve hunting Kune-Vain-Tale in Lezha and Montenegro National Park Tomorr in Berat.
